Eugene Linden

Eugene Linden is an environmental journalist and author whose reporting follows the pressure that global markets and political decisions place on remote ecosystems and Indigenous communities. The Ragged Edge of the World gathers encounters from four decades of travel at frontiers where industrial modernity meets wildlands. Moving through settings that include the Arctic, New Guinea, and Borneo, Linden combines reportage with personal recollection while asking what happens when roads, extraction, money, or climate disruption reach places once buffered by distance. Viking released the hardcover in 2011; Plume followed with a 2012 paperback. Its complete subtitle, Encounters at the Frontier Where Modernity, Wildlands and Indigenous Peoples Meet, identifies the book's central triangle of forces. Linden does not treat isolation as timeless or romantic. He records communities making choices under unequal conditions and landscapes changing within a witness's lifetime.
