Fanny van de Grift Stevenson
Fanny van de Grift Stevenson brought an adventurous life and a forceful literary temperament to her collaboration with Robert Louis Stevenson. Born in the United States in 1840, she travelled widely, supported her family, and met Stevenson in France before their marriage. The Dynamiter grew from stories the couple developed while living at Hyères during his illness in 1883 and 1884. Issued by Longmans, Green in 1885 under the fuller heading More New Arabian Nights, the linked tales move through disguises, secret societies, chance encounters, and comic reversals. Bibliographical accounts credit Fanny especially with The Destroying Angel and The Fair Cuban, making her contribution more substantial than a nominal coauthor line suggests. Her practical experience, independence, and taste for dramatic storytelling helped shape the collection’s energetic changes of voice and setting. The Dynamiter therefore belongs to the shared Stevenson bibliography while also preserving clear evidence of Fanny’s own creative work within a celebrated literary partnership.
