Francis Boott composed American vocal music, and Union and Liberty set words by Oliver Wendell Holmes for mixed voices and piano. The Library of Congress score identifies Boott as the composer and G. D. Russell as the arranger, with publication by Oliver Ditson Company in 1894. Its refrain presents national union as a civic inheritance, giving the piece the public character of an anthem rather than a private art song. A Cambridge Historical Society record documents a later performance by the Harvard Glee Club during a 1909 celebration of Holmes, showing how the work remained connected to its poet and to commemorative musical culture. Boott’s dates, 1813 to 1904, place his career across a long period of nineteenth-century American concert life. Union and Liberty is particularly well documented through both its surviving printed score and performance history. Together, those records establish Boott’s musical role, Holmes’s authorship of the words, and the work’s ceremonial reception.
