Francis Ellingwood Abbot combined philosophy, editing, and religious reform with work in the Free Religious movement. A Harvard graduate and former Unitarian minister, he founded and edited The Index, using it as a forum for liberal religious and philosophical debate. Professor Royce’s Libel, published in Boston in 1891, presents Abbot’s formal appeal to Harvard’s corporation and overseers after philosopher Josiah Royce issued a severe published criticism of his work. The document reproduces correspondence, states the disputed claims, and argues that the university should address the conduct of a faculty member speaking in a scholarly review. Harvard archival records place the controversy within Abbot’s larger papers and intellectual career, while the printed text preserves his own account of the dispute. Professor Royce’s Libel is therefore both a polemical publication and a record of nineteenth-century academic culture, showing how Abbot connected personal reputation, institutional responsibility, and standards of philosophical criticism.
