Life on the Mississippi
Mark Twain looks back on his years learning to pilot steamboats on the Mississippi before the Civil War, when reading the river’s shifting currents and hidden sandbars was a matter of life and death. The first half is a young man’s education in a demanding trade, told with the humor and tall-tale flavor that became Twain’s signature. The second half follows his return to the river decades later, when railroads and change had transformed the towns he once knew. Part memoir, part travelogue, part history, this 1883 book captures a vanishing world and the writer’s deep affection for it. This free PDF and EPUB edition includes the full account.
