Francis James Finn

Francis James Finn served as a Jesuit priest and wrote popular fiction joining school life, friendship, moral choice, and Catholic education for young readers. Born in St. Louis in 1859, he entered the Society of Jesus and spent much of his ministry teaching and working with boys. His best-known books include Tom Playfair, Percy Wynn, and Harry Dee, connected stories whose recurring students allowed readers to follow character growth across school years. My Strange Friend uses a more unusual encounter to examine judgment, loyalty, and the difference between outward appearance and dependable conduct. Finn’s direct dialogue and brisk plotting made ethical questions part of action rather than detached lessons. My Strange Friend belongs to a large bibliography issued by Catholic publishers and circulated internationally in translation. The book reflects the central aim of his writing career: entertaining narratives could hold a young audience while showing how generosity, discipline, courage, and faith become visible through choices made among friends and within a community.
