Francis Noel Clarke Mundy

Francis Noel Clarke Mundy joined Derbyshire civic responsibility to poetry rooted in the surrounding landscape. A landowner associated with Markeaton, he also served as High Sheriff and as a magistrate. The Jackson Bibliography identifies Needwood Forest as his principal literary achievement and relates its publication to his opposition to enclosing the Staffordshire woodland. First issued in 1776, the poem approaches the forest in five sections and includes work by members of Mundy’s regional circle. Anna Seward, Erasmus Darwin, Brooke Boothby, and the younger Erasmus Darwin are named among the contributors, giving the volume a collaborative character beyond its central author. The surviving Gutenberg record documents both that arrangement and the original date. Needwood Forest therefore represents more than descriptive landscape verse: it records a particular place under pressure, reflects Mundy’s public concerns, and preserves the exchange of ideas among eighteenth-century writers connected by locality and friendship.
