Author: Frank Joseph Shulman
Frank Joseph Shulman was a bibliographer, librarian, and scholar whose reference work mapped the growth of South Asian studies across several academic systems. Doctoral Dissertations on South Asia, 1966–1970 gathers 1,305 dissertations completed in North America, Europe, and Australia, covering Ceylon, India, Nepal, and Pakistan across the humanities, social sciences, and related fields. The University of Michigan Center for South and Southeast Asian Studies issued the volume in 1971 as number four in its Michigan Papers series. Shulman did more than list titles: the annotated bibliography supplied institutional and subject context designed to help scholars locate emerging scholarship before comprehensive digital indexes existed. A later open-access edition made the 280-page reference work available through the University of Michigan Press. Shulman's wider career included bibliographic teaching, collection development, and sustained work on Asian studies resources at the University of Michigan. His method joined careful description with an understanding of how scholarship travels across languages, disciplines, and national academic traditions.
