Henry Charlton Bastian combined medical practice with scientific writing as an English physician and neurologist active during nineteenth-century debates about evolution and the beginnings of living matter. Evolution and the Origin of Life appeared from Macmillan in 1874, expanding an essay first published in Popular Science Monthly. Bastian argued that evolutionary thought required serious consideration of spontaneous generation, which he called archebiosis, and linked that position to experiments involving microscopic organisms and heated infusions. His conclusions were contested by contemporaries and do not represent modern biology, but the book remains historically useful for understanding how researchers debated Darwin, germ theory, and life's earliest emergence. Later historical scholarship places Bastian within the British spontaneous-generation controversy of the 1860s and 1870s. Evolution and the Origin of Life therefore records a disputed scientific position at a moment when experimental methods, terminology, and the boundaries of evolutionary explanation were still being negotiated.
