Author: Frederic S. Cozzens
Frederic Swartwout Cozzens (1818–1869) was a New York wine merchant who became one of the most widely read American humorists of his generation, signing his early work Richard Haywarde. He made his name with The Sparrowgrass Papers (1856), comic sketches of a city man's misadventures keeping house in the country, and from 1854 to 1861 he published Cozzens' Wine Press, a trade journal promoting native American wines. He failed in business soon after the Civil War and retired from Yonkers to Rahway, New Jersey. Project Gutenberg and the book's own title page spell his first name Frederic, though it is often given as Frederick.
