Fritz Kreisler was an Austrian-born violinist and composer whose warm tone, expressive phrasing, and short concert pieces made him one of the defining performers of his era. Four Weeks In The Trenches records his brief service as an Austro-Hungarian officer on the Eastern Front in 1914, where he was wounded before returning to the United States. First published in 1915, the memoir places a celebrated musician inside the immediate disorder of military life. Kreisler had trained at the Vienna Conservatory and Paris Conservatoire, made an early American debut, and later toured widely across Europe and the United States. His compositions include Liebesfreud, Liebesleid, Caprice Viennois, and cadenzas for major violin concertos. He also gave the premiere of Edward Elgar’s Violin Concerto, which was dedicated to him.
