Gabi Martínez is a Spanish writer, journalist, and screenwriter closely associated with contemporary travel literature. In the Land of Giants is the English edition of Sólo para gigantes, his account of the life and unresolved death of zoologist Jordi Magraner. Scribe published the translation in 2017. Martínez retraces Magraner’s journey into northern Pakistan, where the researcher pursued reports of an unknown primate while becoming deeply involved with the Kalash communities of the Hindu Kush. The result combines travel writing, biography, reportage, and an inquiry into a killing that remained unexplained years later. Martínez has also written travel and nonfiction works including Los mares de Wang and Animales invisibles. His method often begins with movement through a landscape but develops through the people, histories, and contested stories attached to it. Tyto Alba later adapted Sólo para gigantes as a graphic work, demonstrating how Magraner’s unusual life continued to invite interpretation beyond the original prose account.
