Gelett Burgess worked as a humorist, illustrator, editor, and writer within the literary culture of turn-of-the-century San Francisco. He became widely known for playful verse and for experimenting with language, but his fiction also used satire to examine urban types and social performance. The Picaroons, written with journalist and author Will Irwin, gathers linked adventures around resourceful characters moving through San Francisco. Its title invokes the picaresque tradition, and the stories depend on schemes, reversals, disguises, and encounters across the city rather than on a single solemn quest. The credited collaboration with Irwin is integral to the book’s identity. Burgess’s contribution fits his larger interest in comic invention and unconventional personalities, while Irwin brought his own experience of journalism and city life.
