About this book
The Heart Line by Gelett Burgess bears the subtitle A Drama of San Francisco. Fancy Gray appears very satisfied with herself, with no evidence of diffidence or awkwardness in the account of her appearance. The waiting-room description places a desk within sight of passing cable-car conductors, pedestrians crossing Union Square, and the towers of the Synagogue beyond.
Mr. Payson tells Mr. Granthope that he cannot consent to the visitor being received in his house and asks him not to return. The description of a garret records wavering candlelight on rafters beneath a sloping roof, rows of trunks and furniture, damp cold, and the musty smell of old books.
