Geoffrey Gates is an Australian novelist and short-story writer whose fiction combines crime, travel, and self-conscious play with narrative form. Glass House Books, an imprint of Interactive Publications, issued The Copyart Murders in 2015. The novel centers on a criminal figure who treats crime as imitation and challenges the boundary between an artwork and its copy, turning questions about originality into part of the investigation. Before publication, the manuscript received an honorable mention in the 2014 NSW LitLink Residential Fellowships and Unpublished Manuscript Award. Gates’s earlier novel, A Ticket for Perpetual Locomotion, won the 2005 IP Picks award for fiction and used short episodes, shifting narrators, and elements of magical realism. His shorter work has appeared in journals including Southerly, LINQ, Gangway, and Verandah. The Copyart Murders continues his interest in layered storytelling while applying it to a literary crime novel with a more sustained investigative structure.
