Author: George Bass

George Bass was a naval surgeon, sailor, and naturalist whose voyages helped establish the geography of Australia's southern coastline. An Account of the English Colony in New South Wales – Volume II is principally associated with David Collins, but its account of the voyage by Bass and Matthew Flinders draws on Bass's journal. Their 1798 to 1799 circumnavigation of Van Diemen's Land demonstrated that it was separated from the mainland, and the passage became known as Bass Strait. Bass also recorded observations of plants, birds, animals, coastlines, and geological features, reflecting interests that extended beyond navigation. He was elected to the Linnean Society and contributed scientific observations on Australian wildlife. The second volume of Collins's colonial history preserves material from a journal that was later lost, making Bass's field record part of the work's documentary value. His role is therefore that of a major source and participant rather than the sole author of the larger historical account. That distinction explains why digital editions sometimes credit him alongside Collins and King.
