Mary Johnston was a Virginia novelist and suffrage advocate whose historical fiction moved across colonial America, the Civil War, and Europe. Prisoners of Hope, her 1898 debut, and Audrey, published in 1902, established her reputation through stories of early Virginia. The Long Roll followed in 1911 as the first of two Civil War novels, with color illustrations by N. C. Wyeth. Foes, issued by Harper & Brothers in 1918, follows two Scottish friends through early eighteenth-century Jacobite conflict while pursuing philosophical and mystical questions. Pioneers of the Old South is Johnston's nonfiction; Yale University Press published it in 1918 for the Chronicles of America series. These five titles show a writer revisiting how public history enters private loyalty. Johnston researched period records closely, yet her interpretations were not neutral about memory or power. Her support for women's suffrage also places women's constraints within the wider civic questions raised by Audrey, Foes, Pioneers of the Old South, Prisoners of Hope, and The Long Roll.
