George M. Johnson
1985
Johnson wrote All Boys Aren't Blue as essays addressed to Black queer young people, covering a New Jersey childhood, a grandmother, a fraternity, and two accounts of abuse that are the usual grounds cited when it is pulled from a library. It ranks among the most banned books in the United States, removed in dozens of districts and reported to police in several. Johnson is nonbinary, uses they and them, worked in public health communication before writing, and has kept publishing for the same readership.
