Georgia Blain was an Australian novelist, journalist, essayist, and memoirist whose writing examined families, intimate loyalties, loss, and the pressures hidden inside ordinary lives. Her first novel, Closed for Winter, was adapted as a feature film, and her work ranges across fiction, short stories, books for younger readers, and memoir. Scribe published Between a Wolf and a Dog in 2016. Set largely during one rainy day in Sydney, the novel follows Ester, a therapist estranged from her sister April and from her ex-husband Lawrence. Their mother Hilary carries her own urgent news, drawing the family's separate choices into a study of grief, forgiveness, art, and mortality. It received the Victorian Premier's Literary Award for Fiction and the University of Queensland Fiction Book Award, and it was shortlisted for the Stella Prize. Between a Wolf and a Dog reflects Blain's wider interest in relationships tested by illness and change. Alternating perspectives keep the characters distinct while showing how creative work, memory, and unresolved hurt bind them together.
