Gerald N. Lund wrote historical fiction and religious nonfiction, joining researched events to long-running family narratives. No Unhallowed Hand is the seventh volume of The Work and the Glory, his nine-book sequence about the fictional Steed family during the early history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Covering 1844 to 1846, the novel follows the family through leadership change, growing hostility, and preparations to leave Nauvoo. Deseret Book published the series, whose historical notes distinguish documented figures and events from invented domestic storylines. Lund earned sociology degrees at Brigham Young University. He then spent thirty-five years in the Church Educational System before taking a senior church leadership assignment. He also wrote The Kingdom and the Crown trilogy and instructional works. No Unhallowed Hand reflects his characteristic method: public history provides the chronology, while several generations of one family give readers a continuing perspective on faith, conflict, migration, and communal responsibility.
