Gertrude Jekyll shaped the Arts and Crafts garden as a designer, horticulturist, artist, photographer, and writer. Wood and Garden, published in 1899, brings together practical observation and reflection on the development of her own garden at Munstead Wood in Surrey. Rather than treating planting as static decoration, Jekyll considered seasonal sequence, colour relationships, texture, and the way a visitor moves through a place. Munstead Wood also began her influential partnership with architect Edwin Lutyens, whose buildings and hard landscaping were designed in conversation with her planting. Jekyll wrote extensively for gardening periodicals and followed her first book with works including Home and Garden and Colour in the Flower Garden. Training in art and long experience with craft informed the painterly attention of her plans. The National Trust now cares for Munstead Wood, preserving a site where her writing, experiments, nursery work, and collaboration developed together. Her influence joined practical plant knowledge with a broad visual education.
