Gillian Gill was a biographer of influential women and prominent historical families. Educated at Cambridge, where she earned a doctorate in modern French literature, she later taught at Northeastern, Wellesley, Yale, and Harvard. In We Two, published by Ballantine Books, Gill reconsiders the marriage of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert as both a political partnership and a private relationship. Drawing on the couple’s journals and letters, she follows their early courtship, family life, competing claims to authority, and the public image Victoria shaped after Albert’s death. The complete title, We Two: Victoria and Albert: Rulers, Partners, Rivals, signals the book’s emphasis on shared rule as well as affection. Gill also wrote biographies of Florence Nightingale, Agatha Christie, and Mary Baker Eddy, repeatedly bringing institutional history and domestic experience into the same frame.
