Glendon Swarthout
Glendon Swarthout wrote sixteen novels across western, historical, comic, and suspense fiction, with several later adapted for film. The Homesman returns to the American frontier through Mary Bee Cuddy, who undertakes a difficult eastward journey with claim jumper George Briggs. Simon & Schuster notes that Swarthout and his wife, Kathryn, researched the overlooked experiences of frontier women, a foundation reflected in the novel's attention to endurance and isolation. The book won both a Spur Award and a Western Heritage Wrangler Award. Swarthout's other widely known works include The Shootist, Where the Boys Are, and Bless the Beasts & Children, demonstrating a career that resisted confinement to a single kind of American story.
