Glynn Stewart is a Canadian speculative-fiction writer whose bibliography spans space opera, urban fantasy, and independent high fantasy. City in the Sky was originally published in 2015 by Faolan’s Pen and received a revised edition in 2022. The standalone novel follows Erik Tarverro, a blacksmith’s grandson with both human and Aeradi ancestry, after he leaves home for Newport, the floating city of his father’s people. There he learns that he is heir to a noble family and becomes entangled in trade politics, aerial travel, and conflict with rival dragon riders. Stewart has described the story as one of cultural displacement, family, and learning to belong among people connected by blood but separated by upbringing. City in the Sky develops those concerns through airships and a detailed secondary world rather than through a conventional quest alone. Its place beside Stewart’s many longer series also shows an early stage of his publishing career, before the extensive science-fiction sequences for which his later catalogue became especially known.
