Götz von Berlichingen

Götz von Berlichingen was a Franconian imperial knight remembered for his iron prosthetic hand, military feuds, and unusually extensive first-person account of sixteenth-century noble life. The Autobiography of Sir Götz von Berlichingen presents his recollections of campaigns, disputes, captures, and negotiations from the world of the Holy Roman Empire. The narrative survives in manuscript traditions written before his death in 1562 and German printing followed in 1731. Modern bibliographic and scholarly sources identify later critical editions, including Helgard Ulmschneider’s Mein Fehd und Handlungen, as important for studying the manuscript text. An English edition describes the work as Götz’s account of his battles, feuds, and social station, with Dirk Rottgardt credited as translator in a revised illustrated version. The Autobiography of Sir Götz von Berlichingen also supplied material for Goethe’s famous 1773 drama, although the historical memoir and the later play remain distinct works. Götz’s own narrative offers a rare self-portrait shaped by memory, reputation, and the practical codes of knighthood.
