Kim worked as a New Zealand diplomat before she wrote for children, which is not the usual route into middle grade fantasy. The Last Fallen Star opens the Gifted Clans books, in which Korean American witch families in Los Angeles hold six kinds of magic and a girl born without any of it goes looking for a way in. The mythology is Korean and specific rather than generic, and the food gets as much attention as the magic.
