Grafton Elliot Smith
Sir Grafton Elliot Smith (1871-1937) was an Australian-born anatomist and anthropologist who spent much of his career in England and Egypt. A specialist in the structure of the brain and in the scientific study of Egyptian mummies, he became the leading voice of the diffusionist school, which held that civilization arose in Egypt and radiated across the ancient world. He also played a prominent, and later much-criticized, part in the examination of the Piltdown Man remains.
