Hannah Pittard builds literary fiction from uncertainty, collective memory, and the stories people invent about one another. The Fates Will Find Their Way, her 2011 debut from Ecco, begins after sixteen-year-old Nora Lindell disappears on Halloween. Rather than resolve Nora's fate, the novel follows a group of boys who keep imagining possible lives for her as they move from adolescence into middle age. Pittard's first-person plural voice turns their shared speculation into a portrait of nostalgia and narrowing possibilities. Competing versions of Nora's future multiply from rumor and absence, revealing more about the boys than about the missing girl. Pittard later extended her interest in family tension, unreliable perspective, and self-invention through novels including Reunion, Listen to Me, and Visible Empire. The Fates Will Find Their Way established her distinctive method: allowing what cannot be known to expose the habits, regrets, and emotional limits of those doing the imagining.
