Hannah Rothschild is a British novelist, biographer, documentary filmmaker, and cultural leader whose fiction turns institutions of wealth into social comedy. She became the first woman to chair London's National Gallery and has written about art collecting as well as the Rothschild family. The Improbability of Love, her 2015 debut novel, begins when chef Annie McDee finds a neglected painting in a secondhand shop. Its history draws her into the London art trade, where collectors, dealers, scholars, and auction houses compete to control both its value and its story. Rothschild lets the painting narrate portions of its own journey, giving the satire a long historical view while Annie searches for belonging in the present. Bloomsbury issued the British edition, while Knopf handled American publication. The novel won the Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize and reached the Baileys Women's Prize shortlist. The Improbability of Love established Rothschild's blend of art-world knowledge, ensemble plotting, and sharp observation before House of Trelawney and High Time.
