Harriet E. Wilson

Harriet E. Wilson (c. 1825-1900) was an African American writer born free in New Hampshire. Believed to be the first Black woman to publish a novel in English, she drew on her own hardships as an indentured servant. Her book went unrecognized until its rediscovery in 1982.
