Helen Simpson
Helen Simpson established her reputation through short fiction marked by observation of domestic life, work, marriage, and motherhood. Four Bare Legs in a Bed was her first collection, published in 1990, and won the Somerset Maugham Award. Simpson's bibliography describes stories ranging from a fourth-century Lycia tale and a Norwegian seafarer to a five-act drama voiced by midwives. Penguin presents the collection as comic and tragic, with independence, relationships, and babies recurring across its situations. Before publication, Simpson studied English at St Hilda's College, Oxford, researched Restoration farce, then joined Vogue's staff. Those experiences illuminate the collection's formal playfulness and attention to social performance. Four Bare Legs in a Bed by Helen Simpson is a debut collection that introduced the concerns and compressed storytelling style developed across her later books.
