Henny Kindermann wrote about animal intelligence through observations of an Airedale terrier taught to respond by tapping letters and numbers. Lola presents those experiments alongside earlier reports of trained dogs and horses, questions about memory and perception, and the author's interpretations of the animal's replies. The English edition was translated by Agnes Blake and includes a separate chapter by William Mackenzie, as well as a conclusion by H. F. Ziegler. Methuen first published that translation in 1922. Now catalogued as an early work of animal psychology and education, the book reflects the investigative claims and assumptions of its period rather than modern experimental standards. Its historical interest lies in how Kindermann tried to distinguish trained responses, spontaneous behaviour, and human influence while arguing for greater attention to animal minds.
