Henry Irving was the leading Victorian actor-manager of London's Lyceum Theatre and the first actor to receive a British knighthood. The Drama gathers four addresses in which he discusses the stage, acting, and notable predecessors in his profession. The Folger Shakespeare Library identifies the 1893 Heinemann edition and lists its contents: The Stage as It Is, two addresses on The Art of Acting, and Four Great Actors. Project Gutenberg's text likewise presents Irving as a practitioner explaining theater from inside the profession. His Lyceum work required responsibility for casting, direction, scenery, lighting, and performance, so the arguments are grounded in managerial as well as artistic experience.
