Author: Henry More

Henry More was an English philosopher, theologian, poet, and leading Cambridge Platonist whose work joined Christian thought with arguments about reason, spirit, and moral life. He studied at Eton before entering Christ's College, Cambridge, in 1631, and remained connected to the college throughout his career. An Account of Virtue, or Dr. Henry More’s Abridgment of Morals presents an English version of More's Latin Enchiridion ethicum. Published in London in 1690, the volume was translated and expanded by Edward Southwell, who framed More's moral philosophy for English readers. The book treats virtue as a disciplined ordering of human powers rather than a simple list of rules. More's wider philosophy defended immaterial substance while engaging critically with the mechanical ideas associated with Descartes and Boyle. That intellectual setting helps explain why his moral handbook combines ethical instruction with a larger account of mind, freedom, and spiritual reality. The title is therefore best understood as a translated abridgment within More's philosophical legacy.
