Author: Henry Scadding

Henry Scadding combined Canadian Anglican ministry, teaching, historical research, and collecting to preserve the early civic and cultural history of Toronto. Educated at Upper Canada College and Cambridge, he later served the Church of the Holy Trinity and participated actively in the Canadian Institute. His most enduring historical book, Toronto of Old, assembled architectural, biographical, and topographical memory at a time of rapid urban change. Mrs. Jameson on Shakespeare and the Collier Emendations shows another side of his scholarship. Published in Toronto in 1892, the pamphlet considers Anna Jameson's comments on Shakespeare alongside the disputed textual changes associated with John Payne Collier. Scadding's interest in marginalia, textual evidence, and reading practices complements his better-known antiquarian work. Whether discussing city streets or Shakespearean wording, he approached fragments as records requiring careful context. The pamphlet therefore belongs naturally within a career devoted to recovering how earlier readers and communities understood the texts and places they inherited.
