Herbert C. MacIlwaine
Herbert C. MacIlwaine participated as a British novelist, musician, and arranger in the early twentieth-century revival of English morris dancing. Born Herbert Charles MacIlwaine in 1858, he served as musical director of Mary Neal's Esperance Club and collaborated with Cecil Sharp on The Morris Book. Their work joined historical discussion, dance description, and arranged tunes intended for practical performance. MacIlwaine also maintained a separate career in fiction, publishing novels including Dinkinbar and Fate the Fiddler. The Tower Maiden belongs to that literary bibliography and presents an outsider drawn into the life and traditions of a German town. Its atmospheric setting, old buildings, marketplace, and central legend show a novelist interested in how place can shape personal choice. That concern differs from the documentary purpose of his dance publications but shares an attention to custom and communal memory. MacIlwaine's combined record as fiction writer and musical collaborator places The Tower Maiden beside a notable contribution to England's folk-dance revival.
