Bruce Fink helped establish the scientific study of botany at Miami University and became especially known for research on lichens and fungi. He joined the Ohio institution in 1906 as its first professor devoted to botany, and the university herbarium dates its formal beginning to his arrival. Fink collected extensively, adding thousands of specimens that gave students and later researchers a durable record of regional plant and lichen life. His scholarship emphasized the classification, distribution, and ecology of lichens, a field in which he became a prominent American specialist. He taught previously in Iowa and later moved to the University of Michigan, continuing both research and instruction. His publications ranged from focused taxonomic papers to broader treatments of North American lichens. The Miami herbarium preserves the clearest local legacy of his career, linking classroom teaching, field collection, and systematic science in a single working collection.
