Herta Nagl-Docekal is an Austrian philosopher whose research spans ethics, social philosophy, feminist theory, and the philosophy of history. Feminist Philosophy is the English version of her German study Feministische Philosophie: Ergebnisse, Probleme, Perspektiven. Westview Press published the translation in 2004, with Katharina Vester as translator and Alison M. Jaggar providing the foreword. The book asks what feminist philosophy requires under conditions sometimes described as post-feminist, then tests that question across philosophical anthropology, aesthetics, science, reason, political theory, and law. Nagl-Docekal resists treating gender justice as a narrow specialty; instead, she examines how inherited concepts and institutions shape claims about equality and difference. Her Vienna academic career and membership in the Austrian Academy of Sciences place the volume within a wider body of work connecting German-language and Anglophone debates. Vester’s translation made that synthesis available to English readers while retaining the study’s sustained engagement with continental and analytic traditions.
