Hiram Maxim worked as an American-born British inventor and mechanical engineer, conducting experiments across electrical devices, aviation, engines, and maritime safety. A New System for Preventing Collisions at Sea appeared in 1912 after the loss of the Titanic renewed public concern about detecting hazards in darkness and fog. Maxim proposed giving ships a mechanical equivalent of the sensory method then attributed to bats, using transmitted sound and returning echoes to reveal nearby objects. The short book explains the idea, its experimental basis, possible shipboard operation, and the patents Maxim obtained for the apparatus. Contemporary discussion in Nature treated the proposal as another example of his practical inventiveness, while acknowledging the need to establish its performance at sea. Maxim was already internationally known for mechanical engineering, electrical equipment, amusement rides, and ambitious experiments with powered flight.
