Author: Francis Gano Benedict
Francis Gano Benedict was a chemist, physiologist, and nutrition researcher known for experimental studies of metabolism. Respiration Calorimeters for Studying the Respiratory Exchange and Energy Transformations of Man describes apparatus designed to measure heat production, oxygen use, carbon dioxide output, and other features of human energy exchange. Published by the Carnegie Institution of Washington in 1910, the work was coauthored with Thorne M. Carpenter. Benedict studied at Harvard and Heidelberg, taught at Wesleyan University, and later directed the Carnegie Nutrition Laboratory in Boston. His research helped refine respiration calorimetry and produced long-running investigations of basal metabolism, diet, fasting, and energy expenditure. He also collaborated with James Arthur Harris on equations for estimating basal metabolic rate. This technical volume shows the engineering foundation beneath that scientific program, explaining how controlled chambers, instruments, and careful calibration made physiological measurement more precise and repeatable.
