Horace Greasley
1918–2018
Horace Greasley was a British soldier whose wartime captivity became the subject of a memoir created with writer Ken Scott. Do the Birds Still Sing in Hell? recounts Greasley's capture in France, imprisonment in camps in occupied Europe, and his account of repeatedly leaving confinement before returning. John Blake Publishing issued the work in several editions, some with different explanatory subtitles. Greasley's narrative is presented as personal testimony rather than a comprehensive military history, combining recollection of prison-camp life with the relationship that gave the book its central emotional thread.
