Howard Williams (1837-1931) was an English writer and historian, born at Whatley in Somerset and educated in history at St John's College, Cambridge, where he took his B.A. in 1860 and his M.A. in 1863. He is best remembered for "The Ethics of Diet" (1883), an anthology of vegetarian thought that Leo Tolstoy prefaced for its Russian translation and that Gandhi read with admiration. He turned vegetarian in 1872, opposed vivisection, and in 1891 helped found the Humanitarian League, whose journal carried his series "Pioneers of Humanity."
