About this book

Howard Williams's The Ethics of Diet is based on a text of 1883, and its subtitle calls it A Catena of Authorities Deprecatory of the Practice of Flesh-Eating. The book gathers quotations from many writers, and the transcriber notes that quotations in languages other than English have been left unchanged.

One long quotation from Porphyry argues that kindness toward animals is a form of philanthropy, as the Pythagoreans held, and that abstaining from injuring other species makes a person more careful not to injure his own kind. Another passage describes the gentle character of Shelley, quoting the friend who knew him best. Footnotes cite the Dietetic Reformer and Gleizes's Thalysie, printed at Paris in 1840 in three volumes.
