Hugh Walker was a Scottish literary scholar whose work ranged from biography to editing early English drama. John B. Leicester Warren, Lord De Tabley is a shortened form of his 1903 book John B. Leicester Warren, Lord de Tabley: A Biographical Sketch. The study considers the Cheshire poet, collector, and peer through his ambitions, friendships, and uneven literary reputation. Walker also prepared The Merry Devil of Edmonton for J. M. Dent’s Temple Dramatists series in 1897. He did not claim authorship of the play; his contribution comprised the preface, notes, and glossary for an anonymous early modern comedy associated with disputed attributions. The edition follows Peter Fabell, a magician of local legend, within a comic plot involving marriage plans and social maneuvering around Edmonton and Enfield. Together, the books show Walker working in distinct scholarly modes: interpreting a literary life and making an older dramatic text usable for readers. Precise role labels matter because one title is his biography, while the other is a text he edited.
