George Saintsbury was an English literary critic, historian, editor, and university teacher whose scholarship covered both French and English writing. A History of Elizabethan Literature, first published by Macmillan in 1887, surveys poetry, drama, and prose from the early Tudor period through the seventeenth century. It gives sustained attention to writers such as Spenser, Shakespeare, Marlowe, Jonson, and their contemporaries while reflecting the judgments and vocabulary of Victorian criticism. A First Book of English Literature appeared in 1914 as a shorter guide across a much broader chronological range, moving from early English texts to modern authors and including an outline of literary periods and forms. Saintsbury had already worked for years as a reviewer and assistant editor before becoming professor of rhetoric and English literature at the University of Edinburgh in 1895, a chair he held until 1915. The two books therefore represent different scales of the same career: one closely examines a major period, while the other organizes a long national tradition for introductory readers.
