Hutchins Hapgood
Hutchins Hapgood (1869-1944) was an American journalist and author associated with the bohemian and radical circles of turn-of-the-century New York and Greenwich Village. He specialized in sympathetic, closely observed portraits of people on society's margins, including immigrants, laborers, and thieves. His best-known books include The Spirit of the Ghetto and The Autobiography of a Thief. An individualist anarchist by sympathy, he treated ordinary lives with the care usually reserved for public figures.
