About this book

Paul Jones, by Hutchins Hapgood, was published in November, 1901. The preface says the amount of material bearing on Paul Jones is very large, and consists mainly of his extensive correspondence, published and unpublished, his journals, memoirs by his private secretary and several of his officers. The text says that up to this time in Paul's career his rough life, in association with common seamen from the time that he was twelve years old, and his lack of previous education, made difficult his becoming what he ardently desired to be.

The text says nothing, apparently, could be more desperate than the situation of Paul Jones then, with his guns useless, his ship sinking and on fire. The text says Jones wrote of the mob with aristocratic hatred, and quotes him as saying there have been many moments when his heart turned to stone towards those who call themselves the people in France.
