Iain Clements

Iain Clements writes speculative fiction that turns familiar technology into a source of moral and institutional uncertainty. His April 2013 novel System Error was published as System Error: In Your Favour and concerns an unexpected bank windfall, its recipients, investigators, and the computer system behind it. Clements developed a compact plot outline around a banking error that might not be accidental. That premise joins financial suspense to a classic artificial-intelligence question: whether an automated system can make an ethical choice its owners neither requested nor understand. The book uses science fiction to test what that possibility means for an ordinary couple. Clements has also discussed planning methods and alternative story structures, showing his interest in turning an initial concept into sustained narrative tension. The technology matters chiefly because it puts pressure on human judgment, trust, and responsibility; technical novelty remains subordinate to the people forced to decide what the apparent gift means.
