Ian Lloyd

Ian Lloyd brings together royal history, journalism, photography, and decades of direct observation. The Throne surveys a thousand years of British coronations, moving from William the Conqueror to Elizabeth II and explaining how Westminster Abbey, ceremony, politics, and personality shaped each event. Lloyd studied medieval and modern history at the University of Nottingham before working for Blackwell’s booksellers. Over nearly three decades as a professional writer and photographer, he covered every member of the modern royal family and supplied illustrated journalism to publications in Britain and abroad. His bibliography also encompasses The Queen, The Duke, An Audience with Queen Victoria, and Behind the Throne. That combination of historical training and photographic experience gives his royal writing a strong eye for ritual, image, and telling detail. The Throne places individual coronations inside a continuing institution while showing how each generation revised the spectacle for its own political moment.
