Ian R. MacLeod builds speculative stories in varied genres, moving between fantasy, science fiction, and alternate history for political divergence and intimate character study. The Summer Isles began as an award-winning 1998 novella and later appeared as an expanded novel in 2005. Its alternate Britain avoided the First World War but developed an authoritarian nationalist government, and historian Geoffrey Brook becomes the viewpoint for examining that transformed society. The shorter version received both the Sidewise Award and the World Fantasy Award, while the novel also won a Sidewise Award. MacLeod’s bibliography includes The Great Wheel, The Light Ages, The House of Storms, Song of Time, Wake Up and Dream, and Red Snow. Song of Time received the Arthur C. Clarke Award and the John W. Campbell Memorial Award.
